I
I love the intranet and my iphone just as much as the next guy but I am old enough to remember how things were before Steve Jobs and COD ran my life. It seems like since things are so readily available to us at anytime they have really lost their significance. Is anything really important anymore? I am not talking just about riding but it is what got me thinking about all this.
With the new Animal video dropping sometime in the near future I wondered what kind of impact if any it would have. The first Animal video which came out on VHS pretty much changed bmx and introduced a lot of people to street riding. Edwin and Steven Hamilton’s part in Can I Eat? influenced the whole next generation of street riders. All Day was a solid video which further cemented the all street mind set. It has been 4 years since All Day, there is no doubt that the 4th Animal video is going to have great riding with all around great parts. But will it make any difference beyond some comments on message boards for 2 weeks after kids download the video off of a torrent and watch it then move onto the 10 web edits that were released that day.
Do we take things for granted because we have so much?
When a video dropped you would find out one of your friends bought it and everyone would go over their house to watch it 3 times in a row then go out and try to pull the moves you saw in the video. Things just seemed more precious then. If you met someone who rode you were instantly friends because there were so few riders. Obviously BMX isnt like that anymore but I see some people still trying to hold on to that.
It used to be fun to go out to blockbuster and rent two movies, buy some popcorn and candy. Now I have netflix and stream movies instantly through my PS3.
I used to wait every month for my subscription to DIG to read the news section and check out the amazing photos. Now I just go on thecomeup where I spend about 5 seconds appreciating the beauty of a photo before clicking on an ad for ball park franks.
Every couple of weeks I used to go to Manhattan to hit up Pearl Paint and Scrap Yard I would buy some new markers and caps, get a new issue of 12oz Prophet or While You Were Sleeping mag and check out what other writers were doing. Or I would go on a mission to some local art supply stores and rack as much shit as possible. Now I can order all this shit online and pay with my american express and get a super saver shipping discount on Amazon. I can look at endless photos of graffiti and other artist work which really help promoting biting and plagiarism that you can find here.
Going to the store to buy an album from your favorite band then coming home to checkout the packaging and listening to the music used to be fun. Now tower records is gone and I can download music from iTunes or 5 albums a day off of a torrent.
Check out this video about how things used to be in design kind of sums it all up. A lot more work but it was a labor of love. Soon it will all be gone.

Basically we are heading towards never leaving our houses again just order your groceries online from fresh direct.
Soon I’ll be reading all my books on a fucking iPad.
I’m just as guilty of all of this change as anyone else, and I do think its pretty awesome. But we dont really appreciate things as much because they are so easy to get and disposable. I am just saying I used to like going out and being unreachable. No cell phone, facebook, or email, hit up my beeper motherfucker.

Shutup old man and welcome to the fucking future. Soon we will all be like Wall-E.

I want my human body to die and put my soul into Wall-E.
But until then I am just saying things used to be pretty cool also.

I try as hard as i can to stay out of all of the technological shit and all of the brainwashing advertizing which is really telling us to stay inside and get fat using all of the online resources and pay more for things to be more conveinent to the individual. thins puts me at a loss being a designer and a student because for example when my instructor oversleeps and sends out an email 5 minutes before class saying he wont be there im already headed into the city and dont get the message being that i dont have an iphone or another device that would provide me this service. for as far back as i can remember ive allways thought that that my soul belongs in the 1950′s when things were so much simpler and you could make an honest living off of expert crafstmanship like type trimming but here i am in 2010 trying to be the only dude who doesnt support all of this shit. im far behind and loosing badly at this game and will eventually have to give in but im gonna hold out for as long as i can see if i can stay TRUE. whatever that means.
