Pier 62 [Updated]

Pier 62, originally uploaded by Group Home Bikes.

We rode it first. But Bikes won’t be allowed in.

UPDATE 3/26/10Click here to sign the petition

According to Danny Parks of City Sports Alliance.
I just got off the phone with a representative from Hudson River Park Trust and she told me that they will NOT be allowing bikes at the new Chelsea Piers 23rd Street park when it opens. The reasoning she gave is flawed but it essentially comes down to two things:

1. Their legal department has determined through “due diligence” that skateboarders and bike riders cannot exist at the same time in the same skatepark. She says that this is partly from their research talking to other skateparks around the country and partly from what they’ve observed at their other skatepark on 33rd Street. Their other skatepark, by the way, has never allowed bikes.

2. They received a petition from users from their 33rd Street park (i.e. skateboarders) and the consensus was to not allow bike riders in. So in the Hudson Trust’s view there is much more of a demand from skateboarders to ride this new park then there is from bike riders. As I told her, I’m not sure how they can determine this since it was not a general petition to everyone. I also questioned how they could gauge demand from bike riders if they’ve never allowed bike riders in their 33rd street park in the first place.

    so stupid. so so stupid…

  2. Lalo says:

i’m sorry to hear that fellas. NYC definitely needs a bike friendly park. it’s surprising to see that even New York, being one of the best cities in the world, would be so closed minded when it came their policys. If a pettition is ever created to allow bikes in i’ll gladly post it on my site.

  3. tim says:

pretty lame for city council people to think like that, you could try making a petition from this site http://www.petitiononline.com/ , might help?..

  4. bmx says:

they act like we still wont ride there. let us in or get rolled over.

  5. Will Bruce says:

someone should post some email addresses of the people in charge, or whoever made these claims. I would send a well thought out email to them and I know others at my college would too.

  6. rico says:

i just really hope bikes arent allowed in any of the new NYC parks. bmx riders fuck up skateparks not only with theyre pegs but with theyre bar ends as well.. its no longer a skateboard that weighs 1lb.. now were dealing with 20+ lbs flying in the air going in the way of kids and adults alike!… .. mullaly skatepark in the bronx is a good example of what happens when you let bikers run a park ..

    • Marc says:

yea cause skateboards dont go flying in the way of children and adults alike or anything… maybe you guys should have to velcro that piece of wood to your feet before being allowed into a skatepark.

      • Torey says:

I’m sorry, but your skateboards do damage the concrete. If you look at the end of any ledge, the top of any euro gap, etc there are all kinds of small divets in the concrete. This is from your skateboards landing sideways on the axles of your trucks. If there is no angle iron on the ledges, the ledges become rounded from repeated grinding. Seriously, take a look.

Also, it is foolish to say that skateboards are not dangerous when shot across the park or launched in the air when someone falls.

  7. rico says:

let bikes in if they have no pegs, plastic petals with plastic bar ends or you have to pay $10 to enter. the $ will be used to renovate the park 1 month after it opens to fix all the missing chunks of concrete… LOOK WHAT YOU GUYS DID TO THE CHINATOWN PARK!!!

  8. The German van der Weser...............!!! says:

    Fucking-Skateboard-Nazis!!!

  9. alex says:

someone needs to learn how to build a fucking park correctly. steel coping on ledges generally fixes your whole problem. and all the defensive comments from skaters have flaws.

    1. boards are lighter than bikes, so they wont damage anything.
easily fought. anyone ever put the 150+lb. person ON TOP of the board into consideration? exactly……

    2. pegs fuck shit up.
also another dumbass cop-out. pegs are made from either steel or aluminum. so are trucks. but trucks have some sort of “not hurting concrete” abilities. right…….

    3. flying bikes are dangerous
so are flying boards. dumb fuck.

anyone else need to give me a reason bikes are terrible for skateparks? ill put that one down too. theres even a study online about the effects of bikes damaging a skatepark. basically the point is that there is no extra noticable damage done by bikes in skateparks.

You tell em alex haha fuckin owned with that one.

  13. Buxton Fowler says:

that is ridiculous! personally i have never been to new york but i have always wanted to take a road trip to go ride there; even if i never get to ride the park (if they do come to their senses and let bikes in) i want to do anything i can to get bikes in to that park. unforunatly i dont have local skatepark, but i want to do whatever i can to get bikes in nyc skateparks so there arent hundreds of other riders in the same position i am.

  14. Catfish says:

Did They even ask any bikers? I know theres that on going thing between the bike/ skate community, Why dont they just make a schedule so the bikers and skaters dont clash, like tues, thurs, and sat, be bike days it would be easyer. I hate going to new york skate parks cause like every park i go to we get shut down by cops or a shitload of over confident skaters, its straight up bull shit!

  15. on behalf of the bmx community says:

Okay for one skate boards are juts as dangerous if not mor so than bikes,
    1. When you fall off a bike you can still hold the bars, a skate NO BARS so when you fall that 2+ dildo of wood is going where it wants.
    2. Bikes do damage things we cant deny it but skate boards do just the same, Almost every ledge i come across has skate damage, maybe all skaters need are plastic truks!
So for the skaters, just shut up about all the bikers doing all the damage seeing as we’re not allowed in like none of the nyc skate parks, now try to blame the bikers.
By the way Take blame for your own shit!

  16. travis ledford says:

have them call justin at evolution skatepark canton ohio skater owned skater/biker opperated we’re all friends and everyone usually gets along he would put a good word in. also you all should comeride it cantons park is legit

  17. grant says:

Bikes not being allowed in parks is complete bullshit. In my hometown, Lakewood, OH, an organization was created to take donations for a public skatepark. It was posted as being open to all, and so when donations were being taken bikers would donate too. Shit even our local shop spin donated 15,000. But then a week before the park is open they pull this shit on us saying no bikes. Its bull. Bikers paid for almost half that park and now the skaters are ruining our money. All the ledges that were left uncoped are rounded. Theres chunks and divets on almost every surface.

Now when I moved to Athens, OH for 5 months, that;s a skatepark. Open to all, and because its mostly college students who live here the little kids are actually aware of what happens. The skaters and the bikers get along because everyone understands that there are rules. They all get that you shouldnt cut someone off of a line. And we coexist in a way. Fuck people even trade sports every once in a while. I’ve even seen some guy air from board to bike. That was cool as shit. No one ever gets in fights. It’s fine.

  18. grant says:

Oh yeah, instead of being fucked up, the city leaves a squeegee, push broom and it gets cleaned when someone feels like it. And the city doesnt do repairs. People go to home depot down the street and grab some bondo when they fuck the park up. People actually care. Maybe you should only be allowed in if your going to help keep the place nice for others. That’s rul out most skaters though ey?

  19. Мария says:

Буду знать, большое спасибо за помощь в этом вопросе.

  20. Daysi Dyett says:

Your header is a bit wonky in Opera, mate.

  21. pedro says:

Bikers weigh more than skateboards, so take into account the extra 20 pounds of the bike when grinding the ledges with bikes, skateboards do chip the concrete but not in such a fast rate like bikes when you fall or hit up ledges, and with the danger difference, bikes are type heavy and they are much larger so they take up more space, so there’s more chances of bikers endangering people than skateboarders allthough skateboards can also do damage. But not as much as someone on a bike……but I do believe that its messed up that they aren’t allowin you guys in, but these are true differences…..and plus yous can go to midland beach, owls head, mullaly…..those are pretty good for bikes, let us have ours, even tho we have a couple comin…still lol

  22. [...] in NYC. It’s cool that it’s actually being built. It’s a damn shame that according to Group Home, it almost definitely won’t allow bikes, just like the new Chelsea Pier park. Like – Dislike [...]
